Easter traditions for the whole family

Well hello there! I missed you! It feels good to be back scribbling down my wafflings, sharing my stories and passing on ideas for you to enjoy with your loved ones!

And this one I am particularly excited about because it is my FAVOURITE time of year…EASTER!

The Sun is out, the grass is rise, I wonder where the chocolate eggs is? Ok, that is not the saying, but it seems appropriate for this time of year. Everyone just seems in a better mood don’t they? The weather is getting better now that the sun has finally remembered to make an appearance. There’s fluffy little lambs appearing in the fields, the evenings are getting lighter and you can actually light a BBQ without fear of it being rained off…well almost! J

With Easter fast approaching, I’d love to share some of the traditions that I’ve grown up with and now recreate with my family in the hope to give you some ideas about what to do with yours!

Egg Rolling:

When I was younger my family and I used to visit my mum’s cousins in Cumbria. A stunning part of the UK with rolling green hills and coastlines designed to be explored. We’d eat ice cream on wind swept beaches, go crabbing in rocky coves and giggle over cups of tea and a homemade sponge cake. But the main attraction was the egg rolling.

Each year the local community would gather at the Giant’s Pepper Pot (also known as the Sir John Barrow Monument) and take part in the egg rolling competition down Hoad Hill. Each participant had a decorated hard-boiled egg and the idea is to roll it from the top of the hill, all the way to the bottom without it smashing.

Now this hill is rather large and bumpy so the chances are slim. But its never about the winning, it’s about the decorating of the egg, and then laughing with your family as you try aimlessly to reach the bottom with your egg intact.

Now I am not suggesting you pack the family off to Cumbria (although it’s definitely worth the visit). But one idea is to have a little egg rolling competition of your own. Could be down a local hill or even just trying to make it from one end of the garden to the other.

All you need is a hard-boiled egg. Then decorate it using paints…whatever you like. Then find a stick, and get rolling!

The Egg Championships:

Easter Egg Decorating

Now you’ve heard of egg rolling, why not create your own Egg Championships in your back garden. All you need, are a few eggs, dry weather and clothes you don’t mind getting too messy and away you go.

You can play egg rolling, egg and spoon races and if you’re feeling brave…the egg toss.

If you’ve not heard of the egg toss, it’s really simple (if not a bit messy at times). Two competitors stand opposite each other and throw an egg between them. For each successful catch, they take a step backwards. This keeps going until one of the drops the egg and the other person is declared the winner.

And the best bit? You don’t even have to use real eggs! You can use chocolate ones or even just a tennis ball to save on mess!

Whichever way you decide to do it, it’s a really fun way to do something as a family and gets you out in the fresh air.

Easter Egg Hunt:

Now this is one of my absolute favourite things to do…the Easter Egg Hunt!

When we were little, the Easter Bunny used to hide all of our eggs around the house. Once we got back from church, my siblings and I would race around the house to try and find the eggs. And nowhere was off limits! Cupboards, under beds, under the stairs, one was even in the shower. The only rule was that if you found an egg that wasn’t yours, you kept quiet and carried on looked for your own without giving it away.

Once all the eggs had been found, you could choose one egg to eat before lunch and then after that all bets were off! Although on one fateful year, there was one egg none of us could find and we searched EVERYWHERE for AGES! Eventually we gave up, one egg down and an upset sister to contend with. Turns out her egg had fallen out in the boot of my Dad’s car!

We now do something similar with the girls, hiding little chocolate eggs around the garden and letting them loose with their Easter baskets accompanied with the cries, “Let your sister find some!!”.

Over the years we’ve learnt to implement a few rules to make it fair. Rather than a free for all, we count up the eggs and tell each of them how many they have to find. I’d love to say it stops the arguing but…siblings! At least when the hunt is over, they can share them out and enjoy their treats throughout the Easter holidays.

It’s a lot of fun and we often end up having to hide the eggs over and over again, at the kid’s request, because they don’t want the hunt to end! Obviously each Easter Egg hunt comes with the usual ‘parent tax’…be rude not to really! ;)

Easter Egg Decorating:

Imagine the scene…Easter has passed, and you still have some delicious chocolate eggs to enjoy.  What do you do?

Why not get creative?

In recent years, we’ve started decorating our chocolate eggs with the other eggs and anything else that takes our fancy, to create our own chocolatey masterpiece!

All you need to do, is carefully melt some of your surplus chocolate to use as ‘glue’ and stick your chosen treats and edible decorations to another chocolate egg.  Smart parts of pretzels, nuts, dried fruit, biscuits, sweets, edible flower or sprinkles… it’s your creation.  It’s a really simple, sometimes a little bit messy, activity, but I can guarantee everyone will have fun and there will be something delicious to share at the end of the creative task.  And who knows, it might also help you put off eating those extra eggs for a little longer!

That’s all from me for this month. Whatever you’re doing this Easter and however you’re choosing to celebrate it, I hope you have a wonderful, fun filled time with the ones you love.

See you soon!

Love Kelly xx
